About Eight Waves Martial Arts

Founded in 2021 by Casey Manion, Kathryn Manion, and Rich McCormick, Eight Waves Martial Arts teaches self-defense classes incorporating the styles of Budo Taijutsu and Ninjutsu. Both disciplines originated in Japan roughly 1,100 years ago. Our goal is to teach children and adults of all ages the concepts of self-discipline, compassion, respect, and to defend themselves in any situation. With over 65 years of combined martial arts training and teaching experience, we are excited to share our knowledge and enthusiasm with students and families.

Meaning Behind Eight Waves

The name Eight Waves Martial Arts stems from many components. Many of the techniques in this style of martial art can be conceptualized using aspects of nature. One of those aspects is the grace and power of waves. This balance of grace and power is key to becoming a well-rounded martial artist. The number eight represents the 8 main postures, the 8 basic techniques of the martial art (called the kihon happo), and when an 8 is turned on its side it becomes the infinity symbol (∞), which represents the infinite variations of techniques and infinite ways to resolve a self-defense situation.
